Tialda Bakkum :: Holland
In Holland where I live I do several things at school for example reading with the children who are a little behind, but at the moment we have a few new kids from Eritrea who have to learn the language as soon as possible.
I believe that education is the best start for the rest of their lives! I didn’t know much about Lesvos,I went there for several reasons….the trigger for me was the picture of the 3 year old Aylan but at that time I still had a strong belief that politicians could solve the crisis together. But then came January and there were no changes and in Holland there were a few riots against refugees.
That was for me the point to say…now I have to go and show the people who left their home running for safety there are people who care!
I went there with a friend of mine who thought exactly the same about the situation. We were there only for 10 days but it was good to be together because back home nobody knew how it really felt. We both told just a few people about what we were going to do, only to avoid political discussions.
I remember one family in particular because they were so happy to leave the island and I drove them to the boat to wave at them leaving. The saddest thing was the closed border at Macedonia and I did not have the heart to tell them.
The thing I took home with me is quiet simple: Be Nice !!
